Whether your hair is wavy, curly or thick and coarse, there are four different ways of straighten mens hair.
How to Straighten Mens Hair 2021
Blow Dryer
To straighten your hair a blow dryer, you should follow the following steps:
Step 1: Wash your hair, then apply conditioner. Washing your hair cleanse your hair while conditioning helps retain moisture in your hair. The conditioner also helps make your hair healthier and smoother; hence it makes it easier for you to comb. For those with curly or tangled hair, use a leave-in conditioner, then detangle your hair with your fingers.
Step 2: Apply coconut oil or heat protection serum on your hair. Apart from protecting your hair from heat, it also serves as a moisturizer. Pour a little coconut oil or heat protection serum on your hand and rub it on your hair. Rub it from the root to the tip.
Step 3: Run a comb from the tip of your hair to the root. Doing this ensures the hair is detangled very well and prevents hair breakage. For men with slightly curly hair, the hair becomes straightened as they are combing it. But for tight curls, it becomes slightly straightened.
Step 4: Put the blow dryer on medium heat and start blow-drying your hair section by section. However, ensure you are combing the hair as you are blow-drying it. The drier your hair becomes, the straighter it is. But do not put the blow dryer nozzle too close to your hair.
Maintain a 1-inch distance between your hair and the blow dryer. Do this for every section of your hair until it becomes dry and straightened.
Step 5: Apply a smoothing serum on your hair. A Smoothing serum makes the hair shine and reduces frizziness in the hair. Apply it from the tip of your hair down to the root.
Hot Brush
Hot Brush really helps in straighten mens hair. Hot brush is also known as a straightening brush. It dries, straightens and brushes the hair all at the same time. As a result of this, it cuts down the time spent on styling. You need to have a medium length of hair before you can use a hot brush.
This requirement makes it easy to use for men with curly hair; because of the length of the curls.
Here is a step-by-step process on how to use a hot brush
Step 1: Wash and condition your hair. Neat hair is an essential requirement for almost all hair care processes. Conditioning the hair softens it and makes it easy for the brush to pass through it.
Step 2: Towel dry your hair. Ensure that you always towel dry your hair before using a hot brush on your hair. Work on damp hair and not wet hair.
Step 3: Coat hair with heat protectant spray. Heat can cause damage to your hair. So to reduce the effect of heat on your hair, spray with a heat protectant.
Step 4: Put the hot brush on medium heat and start brushing your hair. Brush your hair section by section, start from the front and brush backward, then brush the sides as well. Hot brush contains bristles that prevent the hot part of the brush from touching your skin. So do not worry about being burned by the brush.
Step 5: Once you are sure that the hair is dry and straight, you can apply a smoothing serum and any other of your favourite hair products.
Flat Iron
Step 1: Wash and condition your hair. To make the straightening process easier, you should use a detangling shampoo and smoothing conditioner.
Step 2: Dry your hair. Before you use a flat iron on your hair, make sure you dry your hair thoroughly. You can towel dry your hair and leave it to air dry or use a blow dryer to dry your hair. However, to avoid exposing your hair to too much heat, we recommend that you leave it to air dry unless you are in a hurry to style your hair.
Step 3: Ensure that you apply heat protection serum to your hair. Heat protection serum helps protect your hair from heat damage while using hot tools such as flat iron. Make sure you apply the serum to every section of your hair. Apply it thoroughly, starting from the root to the tip.
Step 4: Pick 1 inch of your hair with a comb and flat iron it for 1 or 2 seconds. Make sure the timing does not exceed this to avoid burning your hair. Do this until you have flat ironed every section of your hair.
However, take note of the following flat iron temperature for your hair type.
- Flat iron for Fine thin hair – 250 to 300°F
- Flat iron for Normal or wavy hair – 300 to 375°F
- Flat iron for Thick or curly hair (see the list) – 375 to 400°F
Besides, beware of the tension you use when flat ironing your hair. Using too much tension can pull your hair from your scalp.
Step 5: Apply your favourite hair care product and comb your hair into whatever style you want.
Chemicals (Relaxers and Keratin treatment)
Using chemicals to straighten the hair is often called a permanent method; chemicals can keep the hair straightened for three months. You can decide to use relaxers or keratin treatment for your hair.
However, professionals should handle the use of chemicals to avoid hair damage. But if you can follow instructions, you can try using relaxers yourself.
One essential requirement for using a relaxer is to ensure you do not wash your hair for 2 to 3 days before the day you want to straighten your hair. You can comb your hair but do not comb from the root to avoid scalp irritation while using the chemical.
Here are the steps to follow;
Step 1: Carefully read the instructions written on the relaxer container. The chemical content of relaxers are powerful and can cause damage to your hair if not applied correctly. Therefore, take your time to read the instructions to know the method and time of application.
Step 2: Wear a pair of rubber gloves on your hand to protect your skin. Then pour the relaxer into the container provided and mix thoroughly. Ensure it is well mixed.
Step 3: Part your hair in sections and use the application brush provided to apply the relaxer to your hair. Apply from the tip to the root; this is because body heat fastens the action of the relaxer, so ensure you don’t start from the root. Do this until you coat all sections of your hair with the relaxer.
Step 4: Leave the relaxer in your hair for the time stated on the instruction table. However, if you notice burning or irritation, wash it out immediately with a clarifying shampoo.
Once the stated time elapses, wash off the relaxer.
If it comes with shampoo, then use it but, if it does not come with a shampoo, use a neutralizing shampoo. Add conditioner and rinse with cold water.
